Realignment

This hasn't been the week I expected.

Less important: my cell-phone died. Necessities and contractual obligations I won't bore you with thrust me into the Blackberry age, via the Storm. I'm enjoying this muchly, though - like I said - a week ago I had no plans to have any smartphone, Blackberry or otherwise.

Harry Kalas died. And like John Finger wrote, I have no idea how Phillies baseball sounds without him, and I'm not very eager to find out. It's kind of a bummer.

And then - more specific to this blog - I am injured. My recurring shin problem flared up very much on a Saturday ten miler with Dave and then went full-bore on Monday, turning an anticipated 20 into a measly 9. And while I've cut back recovery runs to hold off injuries, this was the first long run I've had to bag since I don't know when.

Tues. and Wed., the pain persisted. I'd hoped to bike but it rained to beat the band those days. Today it's gorgeous, but I still have the pain, so I won't be running.

Seven weeks until a marathon - this isn't a good time to be injured at all. That being said, I'm not throwing in the towel, yet. Saturday calls for six and Sunday calls for 12 (the only mercy is this was scheduled to be a cut-back week). If I can get through those pain-free, I'll try and get through next week (including the 20) and decide for sure then.

In the meantime, though, I'm icing, resting, and - starting today - biking. I'm not going to a doctor because he won't tell me to do anything I'm not doing already. More important, he can't answer the only question I want answered: Can I miss a week of training seven weeks before my marathon and still run 3:15? To quote Missy Foy's husband, Bob - the answers to that question aren't in here... they're out there. And it's just going to take me a few days to get back out there.

  1. Good Luck Marcus, I hope this is just a minor bump for you. It sounds like you're holding things together, I know it's not easy, when fighting an injury.

If you are in marathon shape now then missing a week this far out shouldn’t affect your race time. It’s important to give yourself a chance to heel and don’t try to make up for the lost runs. After you take a week off stick with what you planned on running for that week if the injury isn’t affecting your training.
