What's My Story?

K had the nerve to tag me. ;) Here goes:

How would you describe your running 10 years ago?
Non-existent. I ran competitively in high school and college and quit cold turkey for 14 years. There were some years in there when I know for a fact I didn't run any further than to the mailbox in the rain. Understand this, too: my driveway is short.

What is your best and worst run/race experience?
I tend to be rather even keel about my racing. I don't live in the glory of the good ones very long or lament the bad ones very long, either. In the end, though, I think I'm most satisfied when I execute on my plan - whatever plan that is. Certainly, my marathon was big, accomplishment-wise, but I can't say it gave me much more satisfaction than a lot of other ones.

What is your best race experience?
Didn't I just answer this? Well - it might be referring to the race itself, rather than my own performance in it. If so, I always have a blast doing the Hands-on-House Half Marathon. Fun course, nice crowd, awesome food.

Why do you run?
I like to compete and it's less time consuming than any of a number of other pursuits - golf, tennis, etc... all of which I'm also not coordinated enough to excel at.

What is the best or worst piece of advice you’ve been given about running?
As I age, I'm leaning more and more on the easy-hard pendulum to aid recovery. Also, my track coach always said - like every day - "The cream always rises to the top," which was his way of saying that if you do the training, you'll perform according to your training.

Tell us something surprising about yourself that not many people would know.
With a job and a family, I find myself with time for only one all-consuming hobby. Now, it's running, but from the age of 25-34, it was writing. During that time, I published several stories. Here's one about Johnstown, PA and here's a picture of a less-slim me accepting an award for the only story I ever wrote about running, which I republished on my blog here last year.

Thanks for humoring me, Marcus. As someone that's tried golf and decided that it's not really for me, I particularly liked your 'why do I run' answer.

  3. Thanks for the tag, Marcus.

I'm with you on the easy-hard pendulum. Injury prevention is priority number one.

    I'm working on my answers...
